OS3 STOPS ELECTROLYTE BREAKDOWN
It is well understood that in Li-ion batteries, LiPF6 can break down into LiF and PF5. When that occurs, PF5 starts the autocatalytic process of HF production. HF production inside a Li-ion battery leads to the shortening of life, reduction in performance, and decomposition of other materials inside of the cell. Silatronix® OS3® material helps to stop LiPF6 breakdown, preventing HF production inside the cell. To see example test data, click here
OS3 ELECTROLYTE STABILITY HIGHER PERFORMANCE WITH IMPROVED SAFETY
Silatronix® OS3® is thermally and electrochemically stable. The stability benefit translates to improved battery safety and stability when modest amounts of OS3® are added to Li-ion battery electrolytes as a co-solvent. By providing improved electrolyte stability, OS3® is enabling safer application of higher voltage and higher energy density Li-ion battery systems.
APPLIED LITHIUM SOLVENT
OS3® is a solvent, not a traditional additive. This is an important distinction to make given that OS3® is applied in “additive-like” quantities. The difference is that OS3® is a complementary part of the Li-ion electrolyte and additive system. While additives are typically consumed during the first few cycles of a battery, Silatronix® OS3® works as a component of the system. The material stays as part of the electrolyte formulation throughout the life of the battery. OS3® compliments the LiPF6 system by modifying the decomposition behavior through its solvation mechanisms. Through our research in applying OS3®, Silatronix® has developed a high level of internal Li-ion battery electrolyte formulation expertise to support integration of OS3® into Li-ion cell designs.
